Obituary of Edward Brady Hayes

Ed "Bear" Hayes passed away peacefully at home March 12, 2022 at the age of 86. He leaves behind his wife Teri Zick Hayes, daughters Katharine Steinhauer, Deborah Jones (Norman), 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Bear was born in Arlington, Virginia to Russell and Katharine Hayes. He moved to Kentucky at a young age and grew up in the Louisville area. In 1978, a job opportunity brought Bear to Oregon. Bear found his calling in teaching and coaching gymnastics, bringing his love of the sport to many young athletes. His success eventually earned him the privilege of serving on the US Olympic Committee for 4 years. He considered it a blessing to have a career doing something he enjoyed so much. When not in the gym, favorite pastimes included hiking, biking and exploring the national parks where he especially enjoyed photographing wildlife. He had a deep love for animals and nature. There will be no service, but a celebration of life will be held later this spring. In lieu of flowers, Bear requested that donations be made to a no kill animal shelter of your choice.
