Obituary of Burnis Bontelle Kooken

We all lost an amazing lady, friend and confidant on Groundhog’s Day - a special day as it was when we all would receive our annual Christmas cards from her. Always witty, fun loving and free spirited, our mother was definitely a one-of-a-kind treasure. She always brightened the room and had this contagious laugh that made everyone smile. She was a strong, determined and yet genuinely kind woman that we are all thankful to have known and loved. My sisters and I are and will forever be proud to be her daughters. She not only cared deeply for her family, she also was dedicated to her community. Due to her leadership in the Orenco Neighborhood Organization (ONO) and her involvement as Chair of the Hillsboro Landmarks Advisory Committee, many generations to come will enjoy the special charm of the Orenco neighborhood. Through her tenacious spirit and dedication, she aided in preservation of the majestic Elm trees that still line the neighborhood streets, the creation of historic structures such as the Orenco Woods Nature Park - perhaps one of the most significant parks in the State of Oregon and also contributed to the special designs of the newer buildings built in the surrounding area. Her accomplishments will be appreciated for many years to come. She was respected and admired, but most of all loved. She will be desperately missed by all who knew her!
