Obituary of Herbert Claire Salzman

Herbert Claire Salzman was born June 20, 1921 at Corbett, Oregon. His parents were Albert and Clara Salzman. He joined an older sister, Marian, better known as "Sally". Herb graduated from Benson High School and went to work as a pattern maker in a foundry. He built the wood molds that molten metal was poured into to make machine parts. It was exacting work done well before the advent of computer aided design. Herb took early retirement in the early 1980's. After his retirememt he volunteered for Loaves and Fishes delivering lunches to home-bound seniors in the Beaverton area. He did this well into his 80's. Herb always lived with his parents in the Portland area. The three of them enjoyed deer hunting and usually made a trip to Eastern Oregon in the fall to camp out and hunt. Herb and his dad both loved woodworking. They made several pieces of beautiful furniture. they also built two rental houses on their property. In building the houses, they came up with a design for the trusses that the inspectors had never seen before, and were reticent to pass. In the process of trying to pass inspection, Herb build a scale model of the house design to help convince the inspectors that the design was safe and would work. He also built some beautiful and unique clocks. One of them has totally hand carved gears. It took him several years and lots of tweaking to get the gears to mesh properly. He put a plexiglass face on the clock so the gears are visible. Herb died in Beaverton, Oregon on January 20, 2017. He is survived by nephew, David Wheeler of Marysville, Washington; niece Carol Charvet, of Pasco, Washington; great-nephews, David and Christopher Wheeler; and great-nieces Michelle Herres and Melissa Taylor.
