Victor Smith

Obituary of Victor William Smith

Vic was born to Jay and Lottie Willey Smith in Redding, IA. He was the middle child of nine siblings. He graduated from Maloy high school and joined the Navy. Vic met the love of his life -- Shirley Burns -- at Iowa State College (University) and they were married in 1949. He graduated from Iowa State with a Chemical Engineering degree in 1950 and they moved to the TriCities, where he was employed at the Hanford Works in Richland, WA. In 1964 he received an MBA from the University of Washington. The family moved to Beaverton, OR in 1969, where he became a commodity broker and financial planner. Upon retiring from that career he moved on to his most enjoyable job: doing home repairs as Let Vic Fix It. Vic and Shirley had seven daughters. When anyone said they felt sorry for him living with a house full of girls, he always said he liked it because they took care of him. He loved helping them with school projects and taking them fishing. He and Shirley instilled a love for travel in them by taking them on annual camping vacations and trips to Iowa. Vic volunteered with Community Action of Washington County and other charitable organizations. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; daughters, Linda Smith (Terry Doran), Cheryl Smith, Debbie Smith, Kathi Smith (Joe Schaffer), Terri Smith (Peter Klauer), Jill Mahler (Jim), and Karen Smith(Iketut Suartana), nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, three sisters and one brother. Vic enjoyed traveling and having his family around him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A memorial gathering will be held later. Donations in memory of Vic may be made to Community Action (caowash.org/) or the Oregon Food Bank (www.oregonfoodbank.org/). Please sign the guest book at ValleyMemorialOregon.com Service Information
